  • Abstract:
  • Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are important to India’s economic growth, contributing significantly to employment generation and regional development, yet they face persistent challenges in accessing formal finance. The Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), launched in 2015, addresses this gap through its “funding the unfunded” approach. This study evaluates the performance and regional disparities in PMMY loan distribution across South Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana, during 2015–16 to 2024–25. Using a descriptive and analytical design, secondary data from MUDRA and RBI reports are analysed across the Shishu, Kishore, Tarun, and Tarun Plus categories. The results show that Tamil Nadu and Karnataka dominate overall disbursements, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana exhibit faster growth in higher-value loan segments. Despite improved financial inclusion, regional imbalances persist, highlighting the need for targeted policy interventions to ensure equitable credit distribution and inclusive economic development.
