TECHNOLOGY-BASED UPSKILLING AND ITS PERCEIVED INFLUENCE ON CAREER PROGRESSION: A STUDY OF IT PROFESSIONALS IN CHENNAI CITY

  • The rapid advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and machine learning has made continuous upskilling essential for career sustainability in the IT industry. This study examined the perceived impact of technology-based upskilling on career progression indicators and identified key moderating factors among IT professionals in Chennai City. A quantitative research design was adopted with a sample of 250 IT professionals selected using Cochran’s formula and stratified convenience sampling. Results revealed a significant positive relationship between technology-based upskilling and career progression indicators, including promotions, salary increments, job role changes, and job mobility. Organizational support positively moderated the relationship, while years of experience exerted a negative moderating effect. The model explained 21.3% of the variance in composite career progression and 29.1% in the moderated model. The study concludes that technology-driven upskilling significantly enhances perceived career growth, particularly when supported by organizations and for professionals with relatively less experience. These findings offer important implications for IT companies and policymakers in Chennai and similar Indian IT hubs to design effective upskilling strategies amid the growing AI talent demand.
