abstract = {The rapid pace of technological change and industry disruption has made continuous learning a baseline expectation in fast-changing fields such as IT, edtech, fintech, and digital media. While up skilling is positioned as a pathway to career growth and job security, the constant pressure to acquire new skills often creates an additional layer of cognitive and time-related demand on professionals. This study examines the impact of up skilling pressure on Quality of Work Life (QWL), with specific focus on how continuous learning demands influence work-life balance among professionals in fast-changing sectors. Drawing on Spillover Theory and the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, the study conceptualizes up skilling pressure as a job demand that extends beyond formal work hours, encroaching into personal time and potentially depleting psychological resources. Quality of Work Life is examined through dimensions including workload, stress, autonomy, growth opportunities, and work-life integration. The central argument is that while up skilling is framed as a resource for long-term career sustainability, the short-term pressure to constantly learn may erode immediate QWL by increasing time conflict, techno-stress, and role overload. The review of literature indicates three emerging patterns: First, professionals report anxiety and exhaustion when learning is mandated without allocated work time, leading to “learning after hours” and reduced family engagement. Second, organizations that integrate up skilling into the workday and recognize it as formal work report higher QWL scores among employees. Third, individual differences such as career stage, learning agility, and managerial support moderate the relationship between up skilling pressure and perceived work-life balance. However, empirical work specifically linking continuous learning demands to QWL in the Indian context remains limited, with most studies focusing on Western tech firms or student populations. This paper synthesizes existing research to identify key gaps: lack of sector-specific data from India, minimal focus on mid-career professionals, and scarce attention to the enrichment aspect of learning. The findings suggest that up skilling pressure is a double-edged construct – it can enhance QWL when structured as supported growth, but diminish QWL when experienced as unsupported, perpetual expectation. The study concludes by proposing a framework for future empirical research to test the mediating role of organizational learning culture and the moderating role of time sovereignty in the up skilling-QWL relationship. Implications are drawn for HR policy on “learning time allocation,” realistic skill-roadmaps, and decoupling performance appraisal from speed of skill acquisition to protect work-life balance in fast-changing fields.},
