Phish Guard: A Client-Side Heuristic-Based Phishing URL Detection System

  • Phishing attacks continue to be one of the most widespread and damaging forms of cy- bercrime, leading to significant financial loss- es and credential theft worldwide. This paper presents Phish Guard, a lightweight client- side phishing URL detection system designed to operate entirely within a web browser without requiring any server infrastructure, external APIs, or installation. The proposed system utilizes a 14-point heuristic-based de- tection engine that evaluates structural and lexical characteristics of URLs to compute a quantitative risk score ranging from 0 to 100. Based on this score, URLs are classified into three categories: Safe, Suspicious, and Phish- ing. Additionally, the system provides hu- man-readable explanations highlighting the factors contributing to the decision, enhanc- ing transparency, and user awareness. Exper- imental evaluation on a curated dataset demonstrates an overall detection accuracy of 91.4% with a low false positive rate of 3.2%. The system is implemented using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript as a single standalone file, ensuring portability, real-time perfor- mance, and usability in offline and resource- constrained environments.
