MORINGA OLEIFERA LEAVES AS A NATURAL CALCIUM SOURCE: A REVIEW ON BIOAVAILABILITY AND HERBAL CALCIUM TABLET DEVELOPMENT

  • Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the drumstick tree or miracle tree, is widely recognized for its exceptional nutritional and medicinal value. Among its numerous nutritional components, calcium present in moringa leaves has gained significant scientific and pharmaceutical attention due to its potential role in prevention and management of calcium deficiency disorders. Calcium is an essential mineral required for bone mineralization, neuromuscular function, blood coagulation, enzyme regulation, and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Conventional calcium supplements such as calcium carbonate and calcium citrate are commonly prescribed; however, their long-term administration is frequently associated with gastrointestinal side effects, poor patient compliance, limited bioavailability, and increased treatment cost. Moringa oleifera leaves represent a promising plant-based alternative source of calcium because of their remarkably high calcium concentration along with the presence of synergistic nutrients including magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin C, vitamin K, proteins, and antioxidant phytochemicals. Scientific studies indicate that dried moringa leaves contain significantly higher calcium content compared to milk and many conventional dietary sources. In addition to nutritional superiority, moringa demonstrates anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and osteoprotective properties that may support bone health and mineral metabolism. The present review critically evaluates the nutritional composition, calcium bioavailability, absorption mechanisms, pharmaceutical applications, and therapeutic significance of Moringa oleifera leaves. Special emphasis has been placed on the development of herbal chewable calcium tablets to improve patient compliance and accessibility. Factors affecting calcium absorption including oxalates, phytates, vitamin D3, piperine, and gastrointestinal pH have also been discussed. Comparative analysis with marketed synthetic calcium supplements highlights the advantages of moringa-based formulations in terms of affordability, reduced adverse effects, nutritional synergy, and patient acceptability. Recent pharmaceutical investigations demonstrate that moringa chewable tablets exhibit acceptable pharmacotechnical characteristics including hardness, friability, dissolution, palatability, and content uniformity. Furthermore, incorporation of bioavailability enhancers such as vitamin D3 and piperine significantly improves calcium absorption from plant-derived sources. In conclusion, Moringa oleifera possesses substantial potential as a sustainable, economical, and bioavailable natural calcium source for development of nutraceutical and pharmaceutical formulations. However, further clinical investigations and large-scale studies are necessary to establish standardized dosage regimens and validate long-term therapeutic efficacy.
