Corruption and the Economy: Mechanisms, Impacts, and Policy Responses

  • Unique Paper ID: 202213
  • Volume: 12
  • Issue: 12
  • PageNo: 8813-8815
  • Abstract:
  • Corruption defined as the misuse of public or private power for personal gain remains one of the most persistent challenges to economic development. This paper examines the theoretical mechanisms through which corruption affects economic performance, reviews empirical evidence across countries, and evaluates policy tools aimed at combating corruption. Findings from cross-national studies consistently show that corruption reduces investment, distorts public spending, undermines institutional legitimacy, and hampers long-run growth. Anti-corruption strategies work best when institutional reform, transparency initiatives, and enforcement mechanisms are aligned.
