Smart Helmet Based Bike Starting System

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a smart helmet based bike starting and stopping system. The proposed system makes sure that the motorcycle engine will start only if the rider wears the helmet and will automatically stop the engine if the helmet is removed during the ride. The system uses an IR proximity sensor embedded inside the helmet to detect whether the helmet is actually worn or not. This sensor data is then processed by an Arduino Nano which transmits a wireless signal using a 433 MHz RF transmitter module. On the motorcycle side, an Arduino Uno takes this signal and triggers a relay module connected to the ignition circuit. When the helmet is on, the relay closes and the bike starts. Take off the helmet and the relay opens and the bike stops. The prototype is simple, low cost and effective to promote the mandatory helmet usage amongst the two wheeler riders.
