abstract = {As India faces rapid urban growth and increasing climate risks, architecture must move beyond being “sustainable” to becoming truly regenerative designing buildings that restore rather than simply reduce harm. This paper examines whether the Living Building Challenge (LBC), the world’s most rigorous green building standard, can work in India’s diverse climatic and socio-economic context. The study finds strong potential: India’s high solar energy availability and rich tradition of passive design such as courtyards and natural ventilation, support key LBC goals, especially in energy and occupant well-being. However, major barriers remain, including limited access to Red List free materials, restrictive municipal regulations on systems like on-site wastewater treatment, and a 15–30% higher initial cost compared to typical green buildings. The paper concludes that directly applying global standards in India is unrealistic. Instead, it proposes an “Indo-Regenerative Framework” that blends traditional Indian design principles with modern net-positive technologies. While feasible in the short term for institutional and corporate projects, wider residential adoption will depend on policy incentives and a stronger local green materials market.},
