Antihelmintic Activity Of Ethanolic extract of Nyctanthes Arbor - Tristis, senna Auriculata , Tabernamonatana divericata flowers

  • Helminthiasis remains a major public health problem in developing countries, particularly affecting children and socio-economically disadvantaged populations. The increasing prevalence of parasitic worm infections and the emergence of resistance to synthetic anthelmintic drugs necessitate the exploration of alternative therapies from natural sources. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of ethanolic flower extracts of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Tabernaemontana divaricata, and Senna auriculata using Pheretima posthuma as an experimental model. Fresh flowers of the selected plants were collected, shade-dried, powdered, and subjected to ethanolic extraction using a Soxhlet apparatus. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenolic compounds, and carbohydrates. Anthelmintic activity was assessed at concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 mg/ml, with albendazole (10 mg/ml) used as the standard drug and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) as the control. The activity was evaluated based on the time taken for paralysis and death of the earthworms. The ethanolic flower extracts exhibited significant, concentration-dependent anthelmintic activity. Among the tested concentrations, 30 mg/ml demonstrated the most potent effect, producing paralysis and death times comparable to albendazole. The observed activity may be attributed to the presence of bioactive phytoconstituents such as flavonoids and tannins, which are known to interfere with parasite metabolism and structural integrity. The findings of this study support the traditional use of these medicinal plants and suggest that the ethanolic flower extracts of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Tabernaemontana divaricata, and Senna auriculata possess promising anthelmintic potential. Further studies are required to isolate active compounds and elucidate their precise mechanisms of action.
