abstract = {The periocular region is one of the most delicate and anatomically sensitive areas of human skin due to its thin epidermis, reduced sebaceous gland activity, low collagen content, and increased trans epidermal water loss. These physiological characteristics make the under-eye area highly susceptible to premature aging manifestations such as wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness, dehydration, hyperpigmentation, and dark circles. Environmental pollution, ultraviolet radiation, stress, inadequate sleep, nutritional imbalance, and prolonged digital screen exposure further accelerate periocular skin damage, increasing the global demand for effective under-eye cosmetic preparations. Under-eye creams have therefore emerged as important cosmeceutical formulations intended to improve hydration, skin elasticity, microcirculation, pigmentation control, and antioxidant protection.
Modern under-eye creams incorporate a wide variety of active pharmaceutical and cosmetic ingredients including humectants, peptides, antioxidants, vitamins, retinoids, botanical extracts, caffeine derivatives, ceramides, and nano-based delivery systems to achieve multifunctional therapeutic benefits. The effectiveness of these formulations depends upon appropriate selection of excipients, emulsifying agents, preservatives, rheology modifiers, and advanced delivery systems that ensure product stability, safety, and enhanced skin penetration.
This project comprehensively discusses the anatomy and physiology of periocular skin, formulation approaches, active ingredients, preparation methods, evaluation parameters, analytical techniques, regulatory considerations, and recent technological advancements in under-eye cream development. The review additionally highlights formulation challenges, safety aspects, and future perspectives associated with advanced cosmeceutical products. Current evidence suggests that optimized formulations utilizing biocompatible ingredients, nanotechnology-based carriers, and clinically validated actives demonstrate improved efficacy, stability, and consumer acceptability in modern under-eye skincare applications.},
