        abstract = {Social stratification and social mobility are fundamental concepts for understanding the structure and transformation of contemporary societies. In Karnataka, a state with rich historical traditions and rapid socio-economic change, these processes reflect the complex interplay of caste, class, gender, and regional disparities. This study examines the nature of social stratification in modern Karnataka and the evolving patterns of social mobility shaped by education, economic liberalisation, urbanization, political participation, and affirmative action policies. From a sociological perspective, the paper analyses how traditional caste hierarchies continue to influence social positions, while new economic opportunities have created avenues for upward mobility among historically marginalized communities. The findings indicate that, although significant progress has been made in expanding access to education, employment, and political representation, persistent inequalities in income, gender relations, regional development, and quality of education continue to constrain mobility for large sections of the population. The study concludes that sustainable social development in Karnataka requires comprehensive policies to reduce structural inequalities, strengthen inclusive institutions, and ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities for all social groups.},
