PHYTOCHEMICAL PROFILE AND NEUROPROTECTIVE POTENTIAL OF BELAMCANDA CHINENSIS: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

  • Neurodegenerative disorders represent a major healthcare challenge worldwide due to their progressive nature, increasing prevalence, and limited therapeutic options. Disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are characterized by gradual neuronal degeneration resulting in cognitive and motor impairment. Oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuronal apoptosis are recognized as key factors involved in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Consequently, considerable attention has been directed toward medicinal plants as potential sources of neuroprotective agents. Belamcanda chinensis, a medicinal plant traditionally used in Asian systems of medicine, has gained scientific interest because of its diverse phytochemical profile and therapeutic significance. The plant is reported to contain various bioactive compounds including isoflavonoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, triterpenoids, quinones, and glycosides, which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. These phytochemicals may contribute significantly to neuronal protection by reducing oxidative stress, modulating inflammatory responses, inhibiting apoptotic pathways, and enhancing cellular defense mechanisms. The present review aims to summarize the available literature concerning the phytochemical composition and neuroprotective potential of Belamcanda chinensis rhizome extract. Particular emphasis is placed on its phytoconstituents, possible mechanisms of neuroprotection, and reported in-vitro studies relevant to neurodegenerative disorders. The review further discusses future research opportunities and the potential application of Belamcanda chinensis as a promising source of plant-derived neuroprotective agents.
