PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF MONKEYPOX: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF CURRENT DRUG THERAPIES

  • Monkeypox (mpox) has re-emerged as a significant public health concern with limited approved treatments. This review evaluates current pharmacological strategies against mpox, including antiviral agents, vaccines, immunoglobulins, and supportive therapies. Emphasis is placed on repurposing existing drugs such as Tecovirimat, cidofovir, and brincidofovir, as well as the development of vaccines like MVA-BN and LC16 for pre- and post-exposure prevention. The review also discusses potential therapeutic targets identified through computational and bioinformatics approaches, highlighting recent advances and challenges in clinical translation. Effective management of mpox requires an integrated approach involving antiviral therapy, vaccination, and supportive care, especially in vulnerable populations. The review aims to guide future research and clinical practice to optimize treatment outcomes and containment of mpox outbreaks.
