abstract = {Agricultural intensification has significantly increased nutrient enrichment in freshwater ecosystems worldwide. In India, excessive application of fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation practices has contributed to nutrient loading in rivers, resulting in widespread eutrophication and degradation of aquatic ecosystems. Nitrogen and phosphorus are the primary nutrients responsible for accelerated algal growth, oxygen depletion, and biodiversity loss in river systems. This review examines the relationship between agricultural runoff, nutrient loading, and eutrophication in Indian rivers, highlighting major nutrient transport pathways, regional patterns of pollution, ecological consequences, and socioeconomic impacts. The study further evaluates existing monitoring frameworks and discusses sustainable mitigation strategies, including precision agriculture, riparian buffer zones, constructed wetlands, integrated nutrient management, and community-based watershed approaches. Effective management of agricultural runoff requires coordinated efforts involving scientific innovation, policy implementation, and stakeholder participation. Sustainable nutrient management practices are essential for restoring freshwater ecosystems and ensuring long-term water security in India.},
