mRNA Vaccines: Current Status & Future Prospects

  • mRNA-based vaccines have transformed the field of vaccinology by enabling rapid design and swift updates against newly emerging viruses. Compared with older vaccine platforms, they drive a potent “dual arm” immune response, stimulating both antibody production and cellular immunity. Because their core manufacturing process is highly standardized, these vaccines can be produced quickly and at relatively low cost. The large-scale success of mRNA vaccines during the 2019 corona virus pandemic demonstrated their real-world impact. However, several hurdles remain for their broader application. This review summarizes the current state of mRNA modification and packaging for vaccine delivery, the factors that influence administration routes such as intramuscular injection or intravenous infusion, the diverse therapeutic uses of mRNA medicines, and the challenges in evaluating these treatments across different diseases.
