At the same time, India’s age-old kitchen traditions have, for centuries, functioned as naturally micro biome-friendly healthcare systems. Through fermented foods, probiotic-rich dairy, and medicinal spices, Indian households have long practiced affordable, biologically effective, and sustainable health solutions often without dependence on pharmaceutical drugs. While modern medicine has undeniably improved life expectancy, it has also resulted in rising healthcare costs, antibiotic overuse, chronic lifestyle diseases, and environmental burdens. In contrast, India’s traditional dietary and culinary practices align closely with contemporary micro biome research, offering low-cost, culturally embedded alternatives that promote gut health and immune resilience. ¹ This article examines the economic value of micro biome-based practices originating from Indian kitchens, analyzing their role in reducing healthcare expenditure, generating livelihoods, fostering entrepreneurship, and expanding the nutraceutical and probiotic markets.
