Early Puberty in Girls: The Role of Lifestyle and Hormonal Influences

  • Early puberty in girls, clinically referred to as precocious or early-onset puberty, has emerged as a significant public health concern worldwide. Over recent decades, there has been a noticeable decline in the average age of pubertal onset, particularly marked by earlier breast development and menarche. This shift has drawn attention to the complex interplay of biological, lifestyle, environmental, and psychosocial factors influencing hormonal regulation during childhood. Puberty is primarily governed by the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis, which is highly sensitive to both internal metabolic cues and external environmental stimuli. Increasing evidence suggests that lifestyle-related factors such as childhood obesity, dietary patterns, physical inactivity, exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and psychosocial stress can significantly influence the timing of pubertal initiation. Hormonal mediators including leptin, insulin, estrogen, and cortisol, play a central role in translating lifestyle and environmental signals into neuroendocrine responses that may accelerate pubertal development. Early puberty has been associated with a range of adverse outcomes, including metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, hormone-related cancers, and psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Given its multifactorial etiology, early puberty cannot be attributed to a single cause but rather reflects cumulative exposures beginning in prenatal life and continuing through early childhood. This article reviews the physiological basis of puberty, examines the role of lifestyle and hormonal factors in early pubertal onset among girls, discusses health and psychosocial implications, and highlights preventive strategies and future research directions. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing effective public health interventions and promoting healthy growth and development in girls.
