4D Printing: Smart Materials and the Future of Adaptive Manufacturing

  • 4D printing is an emerging manufacturing technology that extends three-dimensional (3D) printing by incorporating smart materials that can change their shape, properties, or functionality over time in response to external stimuli, such as heat, moisture, light, magnetic fields, or pH. This technology enables the manufacturing of dynamic structures capable of self-assembly, self-repair and adaptive behaviour. The marriage of advanced materials with additive manufacturing has unlocked new frontiers in healthcare, aerospace, robotics, construction and wearable electronics. In this paper, principles of 4D printing, commonly used smart materials, fabrication techniques, major applications and future research directions are reviewed.
