Above The Algorithm: Leadership, Digital Literacy, And Employability in Aviation’s Artificial Intelligence Era

  • The unprecedented integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across commercial aviation spanning flight deck automation, air traffic management (ATM), maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and airline management is fundamentally reshaping three interconnected pillars of the aviation workforce ecosystem: leadership philosophy, digital literacy requirements, and professional employability structures. This paper presents a comprehensive secondary data synthesis drawing on thirty authoritative sources including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Boeing's Pilot Outlook (2023), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), EUROCONTROL, McKinsey Global Institute, Deloitte's Aviation Workforce Trends, the World Economic Forum (WEF), and the European Cockpit Association (ECA) to examine how AI is simultaneously disrupting and creating opportunity across aviation's human capital landscape. Applying a qualitative interpretive research design with systematic thematic analysis, the study identifies a critical 'triple convergence' of leadership deficit, digital literacy gap, and employability disruption that poses systemic risk to aviation safety, operational resilience, and workforce sustainability. Key findings reveal that 67% of pilots feel inadequately trained for current automation levels (ECA, 2022), 59% of air traffic controllers report insufficient AI tool training (EUROCONTROL, 2023), and 71% of MRO organisations struggle to recruit digitally competent technicians (Deloitte, 2023). The paper proposes the Aviation Intelligence Readiness Framework (AIRF) a four-pillar conceptual model integrating adaptive leadership, digital literacy, employability resilience, and ecosystem support as a strategic instrument for navigating aviation's AI transition. Policy recommendations are advanced for ICAO, national aviation authorities, approved training organisations, airlines, and air navigation service providers.
