Phytoconstituent-Based Nanocomplexes for Novel Drug Delivery: Nanoformulation Strategies, Therapeutic Applications, Challenges, And Future Perspectives

  • In recent years, phytoconstituents have drawn considerable attention due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective activities. The low aqueous solubility, bioavailability, and target site-specific delivery of phytoconstituents limit their physiotherapeutic applications. Nanotechnology has offered an innovative approach to the enhanced stabilization, increased bioavailability, targeted release, and improved targeting of bioactives. This review reports an in-depth understanding of phytoconstituent-based nanocomplexes. It further discusses the therapeutic potential of phytoconstituent-loaded nanocomplexes in the treatment and management of various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammation, and antimicrobial infections. Moreover, the present review highlights recent advances, challenges, and prospects of phytoconstituent-based nanoformulations. Phytoconstituent-based nanocomplexes offer a new horizon in the field of pharmaceutical nanotechnology for the safe, effective, and targeted drug delivery of various phytoconstituents.
