  • Abstract:
  • Assessment practices play a central role in defining the nature of valid knowledge and valued learning within education systems. In India, formal assessment has historically been shaped by standardized examination models that emphasize uniformity, comparability, and content reproduction. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 signals a paradigmatic shift by advocating competency-based, formative, and holistic assessment while simultaneously foregrounding the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) as an important epistemic resource for educational renewal. This paper undertakes a conceptual and policy-oriented analysis of the relationship between assessment standardization and the epistemological foundations of IKS. It argues that conventional interpretations of standardization, when equated with uniform testing and quantification, are epistemologically misaligned with indigenous knowledge traditions that emphasize experiential learning, ethical reasoning, contextual understanding, and integrative development. Drawing on NEP 2020 and recent curricular reforms, the paper proposes a reconceptualization of assessment standardization as a flexible, competency-oriented framework that maintains rigor and transparency without eroding epistemic plurality. By positioning the Indian Knowledge System as a guiding framework for rethinking assessment practices rather than as an additive curricular element, the study contributes to contemporary debates on assessment reform, equity, and culturally responsive education. The paper offers theoretical insights relevant to policy implementation, curriculum design, and teacher education within the evolving landscape of Indian schooling.
