  • Abstract:
  • Electronic dental anesthesia (EDA), most commonly delivered through transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), has been proposed as a non-pharmacological method for controlling dental pain and reducing anxiety associated with needle-based local anesthesia. The electronic anesthesia techniques centers on the history of pain control in dentistry, the evolution of electronic anesthesia techniques, and the application of EDA in clinical dental practice, with particular relevance to children and needle-phobic patients. A structured literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using combinations of terms related to electronic dental anesthesia, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, dental pain, local anesthesia, injection anxiety, needle phobia, pediatric dentistry, and behavior management. This review reorganizes the topic into a publication-oriented narrative review focusing on the historical basis, biological rationale, clinical applications, advantages, limitations, and future prospects of EDA in dentistry. The available literature suggests that EDA may be useful as an adjunct or alternative in selected minor procedures, especially in pediatric and behavior-management settings, but evidence remains heterogeneous and insufficient to support routine replacement of conventional local anesthesia across all operative indications.[1][2][3][4]
