Optimum placement of PMU for wide area protection

Abstract
This paper focuses on optimum placement of phasor measurement units or PMU in wide area protection system. Integer linear programming method is used for optimization. High equipment & installation costs of pmu & its communication costs can be reduced through optimum placement of Pmu’s. Placement of pmu on generator buses is also considered as a constraint for efficient backup protection. The optimization of pmu is modelled with GAMS software & WSCC 9 bus system is modelled in Power world simulator software.
