Abstract
The city of Kolhapur famous as 'Dakshin Kashi' since ancient times is a holy place and was historically known for being the capital of the 'Kolhapur Sansthan'. Located in the south-west part of Maharashtra, it is one of the growing cities in Maharashtra in economic, social, traditions along with its religious historic background. In this historic background the Shakti Peeth of Kolhapur has valuable impact on the all sectors of Kolhapur. The Shri Mahalakshmi (AmbaBai) Temple of Kolhapur is one of the six Shakti Peeths in Maharashtra listed in various puranas of Hinduism. The temple belongs architecturally to the Kannada Chalukya empire and may have been first built in circa 700 AD. Mounted on the precious Pashan1 or Tandula2 stone platform contains various architectural features. But the natural beauty of this heritage is diminishing day by day. The temple complex is facing various problems like lack of harmony in architecture, poor conditions of entrances, inadequate security, lack of infrastructural facilities, etc. Along with the temple complex the surrounding area of temple is also giving the birth to secondary problems like congestion of traffic, absence of tourist’s resident facilities, parking facility, building obstructions to Kirnotsav etc. To get the knowledge about the actual condition of temple our team hadgoing conducted various surveys in the temple area. From the data collected in the surveys we have understood the factors which are creating these problems & based on that, the possible solutions to resolve these problems completely from its root. We are also going to check what are the effects of our solution on the social, traditional culture of Kolhapur and on the issues regarding the feelings of people related to temple. Economic issues are the most concerning part of our project. In the Final outlay summery of paper we are going to give the various proposals about the temple complex except temple core. Talking about temple core we are going to give various retrofitting measures. Our team is not only focusing on the temple area development but also solving the other problem generated as the effect of development plan on the surrounding area.
