Abstract
India has been working towards the empowerment of women and socially deprived sections of the society by introducing a number of welfare activities and by encouraging the involvement of NGOs and other voluntary organizations to undertake such programmes. One such programme initiated is Self-Help Groups (SHGs) through which women empowerment is ensured at the local, state and national level. SHGs are the basic and informal institutions which give access to microfinance for poor and neglected sections of the society to improve their socio-economic conditions and capabilities.
