Abstract
Delay Tolerant Network is a subset of Mobile Adhoc Networks, whichdealwith wireless communication and data delivery with intermittent connection or partitioned networks. Nodes in this network discover the relay nodes for very short intervals as soon as they encounter each other. As it works on intermittent connection, end-to-end path establishment is not possible, it works on store carry and forward paradigm. If nodes are not able to forward messages due to the absence of connectivity, messages got buffered based on different queue policies. The scheduling and drop policies comprise the buffer management policy. Scheduling determines which messages are forwarded first, while drop policy determines which messages get dropped in the occurrence of a buffer overflow. This paper provides an overview of several buffer management strategies utilized in DTN and assesses their benefits and drawbacks. Buffer management isdivided according to the type of information used, whether it is local knowledge about messages available at the node or global knowledge about messages in DTN network.
