abstract = {Unhygienic conditions are predominant in the urinals at railways and highways because of the scarcity of water in India. In this paper we have researched on the recycling of water used in the urinals. The subject of study was treatment and reuse of flushed urine water using Down Flow Hanging Sponge Reactor system (DHS). The bacteria paste was applied on top of the reactor. The tap water was applied over the cylindrical sponge for three days which resulted in the growth of bacteria inside reactor. Flushed urine water was trickled down in the reactor drop by drop through pump at a speed of 1.3 rpm. The treated water was collected and was examined for different parameters. After treatment, the concentration of COD in water was 123 mg/L at removal rate of 78.19%; concentration of BOD in water was 39 mg/L at removal rate of 84.77%; and concentration of NH3-N in water was 19.6 mg/L at removal rate of 93.12%. It was also observed that amount of DO was also increased by 300% and odour was completely removed.},
