In the year 1986 Environment protection Act was passed. The objective of this Act is to protect and improve the environment and environmental conditions and to take strict actions against all those who harm the environment. Article 47 of the constitution declares raising of the level of nutrition and the standard of the living of its people and improvement of public health as one of the primary duties of the state. Article 48 provides that the state shall endeavour to protect and improve the environment and to safeguard forest and wildlife of the country. Article 51-A (g) says that. “It shall be duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures”. Specific legislative measures to contral environment pollution’. Parliament of India has also passed some special statutes for the environment protection. The supreme court has laid down that the “Precautionary principle” and the “polluter pays principle” are the essential features of “sustainable development”.
