abstract = {The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has brought a major shift in India’s educational landscape by encouraging the use of the mother tongue as the primary medium of instruction during the foundational years of schooling. The policy believes that learning in one’s native language enhances comprehension, emotional connection, and long-term retention. This approach also finds resonance in the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) and Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), which together aim to build a strong foundation for quality teaching and holistic child development.
However, the growing dependence on smartphones among children and parents has started influencing the learning environment in unexpected ways. While digital tools can be helpful in expanding access to educational resources, overuse mostly leads to distraction, reduced attention span, and even distortion in language expression. The present study seeks to understand how smartphone addiction affects student’s learning interest and the purity of their mother-tongue usage in classroom settings. It further explores how teacher training under ITEP and the home environment can play a role in reducing these negative effects.
The findings are expected to provide insights into how digital exposure interacts with linguistic and cognitive development in the early years. The outcomes may also help suggest new strategies for integrating digital literacy with mother-tongue-based education under ITEP, ensuring that technology supports rather than hinders the goals of NEP 2020.},
