A Critical Review on Shrink Fit Holding Technology for Machining of High Precision Components

  • Shrink fit tool holder is emerged as one of the precise, rigid and reliable tool holder in the advanced era of machining compared to collets and hydraulic chucks. These holders operates in temperature controlled environment to develop thermal expansion and contraction. This tool holder has a perfect concentricity, high gripping torque, excellent dynamic balance essential for high speed machining and cutting, finds its components used in aerospace, manufacturing, mould making and precision tool making industries. Special features of this holder has significant adoptions in precision CNC machining centers. This paper reviews on working principle, thermo mechanical technology advancement, dynamic gripping feature, automated temperature controlled parameters, heating techniques, tooling stations and lightweight hybrid tool holding techniques of shrink fit holders.
