abstract = {Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication protocol development and deployment have intensified due to the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart device ecosystems' rapid growth. The foundation of contemporary IoT applications in sectors including healthcare, transportation, energy, and manufacturing is M2M communication, which permits autonomous data transmission between devices without human intervention. The study examines their fundamental features, operational methods, and architectural principles, emphasizing their advantages and disadvantages in a range of application scenarios. Critical performance measures, including scalability, latency, security, energy efficiency, interoperability, and Quality of Service (QoS), are used to give a comparative analysis. The difficulties in choosing, integrating, and deploying protocols in contexts with limited resources are also covered in the review. Additionally, the impact of new developments like the convergence of edge computing, 5G connections, and improved security frameworks on the development of M2M communication is investigated. Future research directions are outlined in the paper's conclusion, including the necessity of intelligent and adaptive protocol frameworks that can handle changing application requirements. This paper attempts to assist researchers, engineers, and practitioners in choosing and putting into practice the best M2M communication protocols for next-generation IoT systems by summarizing current developments and offering practical insights.},
