abstract = {The rapid evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed traditional residences into intelligent ecosystems known as smart home automation systems (SHAS). This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of modern SHAS architectures, focusing on the transition from reactive to proactive environments via Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Edge computing. Utilizing a three-layer architectural framework comprising the Device, Gateway, and Internet layers the study examines the integration of diverse communication protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, and the emerging Matter standard. Performance evaluation using the ISO/IEC 25010 quality model reveals a high user acceptance rate, particularly regarding security (4.83) and functional suitability. Key findings highlight the potential of SHAS in reducing residential carbon footprints by up to 65% through optimized HVAC control and improving geriatric care outcomes via the Intelligent Medical and Elderly Care Team (IMECT) model, which significantly enhances Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scores and Social Cognitive Adaptation (SCAA). Despite these advancements, the study identifies critical challenges including vendor lock-in, data privacy concerns under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the persistent vulnerability of the "human link" in cybersecurity, where human error facilitates malware like Mirai. Future projections estimate the global smart home market will reach Rs. 297.04billion by 2030, driven by 6G connectivity and decentralized data management. This research underscores the necessity of a user cantered approach to bridge the digital gap for underserved populations and ensure the long-term sustainability of intelligent living spaces. The analysis confirms that modular systems utilizing Home Assistant and Cloudflare provide robust security frameworks for 21st-century residential environments while maximizing resource efficiency.},
