  • Abstract:
  • Rapid urbanization has significantly altered the natural hydrological processes of urban areas, leading to increased pressure on existing drainage infrastructure. This study examines the impact of urbanization on the drainage system in the South-West Zone of Surat, a rapidly developing urban region characterized by high population growth and land-use transformation. The research focuses on changes in land use and land cover (LULC), increase in impervious surfaces, and their consequent effects on stormwater runoff and drainage capacity. The study integrates geospatial analysis using GIS techniques, rainfall data assessment, and field- based observations to evaluate the efficiency of the existing drainage network. Key parameters such as runoff coefficient, drainage density, and peak discharge were analyzed using methods like the Rational Method. Findings indicate that increased built-up areas and inadequate drainage capacity have intensified surface runoff, resulting in frequent urban flooding and waterlogging, especially during peak monsoon periods. Furthermore, the study identifies critical gaps in stormwater management, including insufficient sewer capacity, poor maintenance, and lack of integrated planning. The results highlight the urgent need for sustainable urban drainage strategies, such as the implementation of green infrastructure, improved stormwater management systems, and policy interventions to mitigate flood risks. This research provides valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers to enhance the resilience of drainage systems in rapidly urbanizing cities like Surat.
