  • Abstract:
  • The present study uses a combination of both experimental and FEA approaches for optimising the design of an automatic B-pillar outer panel used in vehicle side impact protection system. In case of accidents from the side, B-pillars are responsible for preventing any infiltration as well as taking care of the absorption of the shock energy in order to protect the passengers. The purpose of the research is to offer the design of an automatic B-pillar outer panel that would allow the vehicle to sustain more damage under collision conditions without weighing it down significantly, along with ensuring ease of manufacture in an automated environment. Development of comprehensive FE models for analysis of reactions forces, deformation and stress distribution when simulated under impact situations. Performance of controlled 3-point bending tests for improving FEA model design is most probable. Iterative optimization of geometric configuration, thickness, materials, and reinforcement of panels using FE data is expected.
