abstract = {The global digital payments ecosystem is undergoing rapid transformation driven by embedded finance, contactless commerce, smart mobility infrastructure, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled systems, and real-time payment technologies. Transportation-linked payment infrastructures such as RFID-enabled toll systems, transit wallets, vehicle-linked payment ecosystems, and mobility payment platforms are increasingly evolving beyond transportation use cases into broader merchant commerce ecosystems.
Globally, payment ecosystems such as E-ZPass in the United States, ERP systems in Singapore, ETC infrastructure in China, and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) ecosystems across Europe demonstrate increasing convergence between transportation infrastructure, digital identity systems, merchant commerce, and embedded financial services. Simultaneously, the rapid growth of real-time digital payment systems such as UPI has increased exposure to fraud risks including QR-code manipulation, merchant impersonation, unauthorized transaction initiation, and social engineering attacks.
This study proposes a conceptual framework for transforming RFID-enabled transportation payment infrastructures into scalable merchant commerce ecosystems while simultaneously integrating RFID-based merchant validation and proximity authentication as supplementary risk mitigation layers for real-time payment systems. The proposed framework integrates RFID infrastructure, merchant acquiring systems, tokenization layers, cloud-based payment orchestration, AI-driven fraud monitoring, and mobility-linked financial ecosystems.
The paper contributes to the emerging literature on embedded finance, smart mobility, merchant acquiring innovation, digital payment security, and transportation-linked commerce ecosystems by positioning RFID-enabled transportation payment infrastructure not merely as a toll collection mechanism, but as a foundational embedded financial ecosystem capable of supporting intelligent global commerce, secure contactless transactions, and next-generation mobility-linked financial services.},
