abstract = {The issue of self-identity in Anita Nair's Ladies Coupé is examined in this research paper, with an emphasis on how female characters fight to establish their uniqueness in a patriarchal society. The story follows six ladies as they travel in a train compartment, where their common area is used for storytelling, introspection, and emotional awakening. The study emphasises how women encounter comparable types of societal constraints and identity crises influenced by patriarchal expectations, despite differences in age, class, and background. This research looks at Akhila's journey of self-discovery as well as those of other female characters including Prabha Devi, Margaret Shanti, Sheela, and Marikolanthu. It demonstrates how their stories emphasise sentiments of emotional repression, dissatisfaction, and a need for autonomy and expression. The study is presented from the feminist perspectives of Elaine Showalter and Virginia Woolf, who highlight the concepts of gynocritical analysis, independence, and personal space when looking at women’s experiences. The results demonstrate that Ladies Coupé's self-identity is dynamic as opposed to static, constantly self-aware, self-resisting, and even evolving. The train compartment starts to symbolise women's liberation from patriarchal rule and their capacity to reclaim their voice. Overall, the study concludes that Anita Nair views self-identity as a liberating process of female bonding, self-actualization, and emotion.},
