A STUDY ON CONSUMER PROTECTION AND FINANCIAL EDUCATION IN INDIAN BANKING SECTOR

  • Banking Industry in India has a strong history, which covers the traditional banking practices from the time of Britishers to reforms period, Nationalization to privatization of banks. Now number of foreign banks in India is increasing. The use of technology has brought a revolution in working style of the bank. Nevertheless, the fundamental aspects of banking is trust and the confidence of the people on the institution remain the same. Consumer protection is need of the hour, there has been many reforms in banking sector like dilution of government stakes, deregulation etc that resulted in greater completion and increased attention to be given to consumer protection in banking sector. There is reduction in cost of banking services and Consumers need to make use of facilities available like use of ATM’S, internet or telephone banking etc. National centre for financial education is a joint intiative of all financial sector regulators is RBI, SEBI IRDAI and PFRDA. For an average Indian financial literacy is yet to become a priority. India is home to 17.5% of world’s population and nearly 76% of its adult population does understand basic financial concepts. Financial education is more critical for developing nations like India. Financial litracy according to its literal definition, is the ability to use skills and knowledge to take effective and informal money management decision. Lack of basic financial literacy leads to unproductive investment decision. Financial litracy is one of the top priorities for most of the nations. Both consumer protection and financial litracy goes hand in hand if financial education is given on priority basis it supports the consumer protection in banking sector. Banking sector is adding many technological advancements to its services. It is essential to customers to get knowledge of provided services. Therefore, Banks have to take much more initiative to give financial education to present and potencial customers to flourish in its services. This paper makes an attent to analiysis the customers protection services and financial education initiatives taken by Banks to compite and sustain in Banking sector.
