Two fundamental changes occur when computers automate reasoning based on associations in data or associations inferred from expert knowledge: the transition from data collection to pattern recognition, and from granting access to educational resources to automating decisions regarding instruction and other educational processes. Automating decision-making and identifying patterns are significant advancements in the scope of tasks that can be assigned to a computer system.
