Secure Cloud Storage: Protecting User Data Privacy in Modern Cloud Computing

  • Cloud storage has become a fundamental component of modern computing, enabling individuals and organizations to store, access, and manage information through scalable and remotely managed infrastructure. However, transferring sensitive information to third-party cloud environments introduces significant security and privacy challenges, including unauthorized access, data breaches, insider threats, insecure interfaces, multi-tenancy risks, data loss, and reduced visibility over data handling. This study presents a structured literature-based analytical review of security and privacy challenges in modern cloud storage and examines the complementary roles of encryption, authentication, identity and access management, access control, privacy-preserving technologies, secure data transmission, integrity verification, and public auditing. The analysis indicates that encryption is fundamental to confidentiality but cannot independently provide comprehensive data privacy. Effective protection requires coordinated key management, strong authentication, least-privilege authorization, integrity assurance, privacy-aware data management, continuous monitoring, and appropriate governance. The review further demonstrates that data privacy extends beyond confidentiality to include data control and rights, transparency, data location, retention, accountability, and user control throughout the data lifecycle. Based on the synthesis, the study proposes an Integrated Privacy-Centric Cloud Storage Perspective that connects threat identification, technical protection, integrity assurance, privacy and governance, and accountability. The study concludes that trustworthy cloud storage requires a layered and complementary security approach rather than dependence on any single mechanism. The proposed perspective provides a practical basis for understanding the relationships among major cloud-security mechanisms and for strengthening secure, privacy-aware, and trustworthy cloud-storage practices.
