  • Abstract:
  • Background: Road traffic accidents are an important public health problem and school-going children are particularly vulnerable to road traffic injuries. Lack of awareness regarding traffic rules, road signs, safe crossing practices and other road safety measures may increase the risk of accidents. Therefore, effective and interesting educational strategies are needed to improve children's knowledge regarding road safety. Aim: The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching method on knowledge regarding road safety measures among school-going children in selected schools of the Vidarbha region. Objectives: The objectives were to assess the pre-test knowledge regarding road safety measures, assess post-test knowledge after video-assisted teaching, compare pre-test and post-test knowledge scores, and determine the association between post-test knowledge and selected demographic variables. Methods: A quantitative research approach with a quasi-experimental two-group pre-test and post-test design was adopted. A total of 120 school-going children were selected by non-probability convenient sampling technique, with 60 children in the experimental group and 60 in the control group. Data were collected using a self-structured knowledge questionnaire consisting of 30 questions. The experimental group received video-assisted teaching regarding road safety measures. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired 't' test, unpaired 't' test and chi-square test. Results: In the experimental group, the mean pre-test knowledge score was 13.20 ± 2.48, which increased to 19.23 ± 2.63 in the post-test, with a mean difference of 6.03 ± 3.22. The calculated paired 't' value was 14.51 with p = 0.0001, indicating a statistically significant improvement in knowledge. In the control group, the mean knowledge score increased from 12.48 ± 2.31 to 13.06 ± 2.20, with a mean difference of 0.58 ± 1.06. The post-test mean knowledge score was higher in the experimental group (19.23 ± 2.63) than in the control group (13.06 ± 2.20). The unpaired 't' value was 13.90 with p = 0.0001, demonstrating a statistically significant difference between the groups. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that video-assisted teaching was effective in improving knowledge regarding road safety measures among school-going children. The intervention can therefore be considered a useful educational strategy for school health programmes and road safety education.
