abstract = {Food security remains a critical development challenge, requiring equitable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. This paper examines the relationship between food security and public food distribution, with particular emphasis on India’s Public Distribution System (PDS). It analyses the four dimensions of food security—availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability—and explores the implications of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and unequal resource distribution. The paper also evaluates major institutional interventions, including the National Food Security Act, 2013, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Direct Benefit Transfer, and One Nation, One Ration Card. Particular attention is given to operational challenges such as corruption, leakage, exclusion errors, inadequate storage infrastructure, and the limited nutritional diversity of distributed food grains. Experiences from Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh illustrate approaches to strengthening food distribution. The paper argues that transparent governance, sustainable agricultural practices, technological innovation, and inclusive social protection are essential for improving food security in India and advancing equitable food systems globally.},
