  • Abstract:
  • The term papers examine the kinship structures of the Dombo, a previously unknown hill tribe in Odisha. The study delves into language categories like family and empathy, highlighting the discrepancies between theoretical concepts and observable behaviors in their society. Language: Some speak Oriya, while others speak different languages, depending on the region they live in. For many generations, the Dombo have been known as drumbeaters, weavers, and musicians in various districts of Odisha. However, they have recently been deprived of their age-old traditional occupations due to the advent of modern innovations. Thus, they are now compelled to work as landless agricultural daily wage workers and at construction sites. Some Dombos have also migrated from their rural areas to cities in search of better livelihood opportunities. Traditionally, the Dombos served as drumbeaters during the marriage ceremonies of other castes. In addition, their supplementary occupation is manual labor. This community permits the remarriage of widows and divorcees. However, the Brahmin community does not officiate at any of their religious functions or ceremonies. Additionally, the Bhondar is and Dhabas do not serve them. They collect firewood from the jungle to sell in the market, and a few have turned to agriculture as a means of livelihood.
