  • Abstract:
  • This study compare thermal performances of two types of heat sinks that are most commonly used in wide electronic equipment cooling are Plate-fin and Square Pin-fin heat sinks. These heat sinks are arranged in parallel flow with different inclinations (i.e.30°, 60° and 90°) and an experimental investigation is conducted by varying different velocities. Based on experimental data correlations of friction factor and Nusselt number are developed from existing literature. Thermal Resistance of the optimized plate-fin and square pin-fin heat sinks are compared under forced convection with the flow parallel to x-axis. Finally the optimized square pin-fin heat sinks have smaller thermal resistance of 8% decrease in 90° inclination and 10.06% decrease in 60° inclination and 14.27% decrease in 30° inclination compared to plate fin heat sinks. Finally 11.33% decrease of friction factor is observed for square pin-fin heat sink in 90° inclination and 17.3% decrease in 60° inclination and 20% decrease in 30° inclination when compared to plate-fin heat sink. It also exhibits high heat transfer rate compared to plate-fin heat sinks are depicted. As inclination is more the experimental results conclude square pin-fin heat sinks exhibit good thermal characteristics compared to plate-fin heat sinks.
