  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rapidly becoming one of the most significant public health emergencies of this century. It occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve in ways that render standard treatments ineffective. When drugs fail, infections persist, complications multiply, healthcare costs soar, and people die who otherwise should not. This review presents AMR in a clear, teachable format: what it is, how it emerged, the biological mechanisms microbes use to resist drugs, the human behaviors that fuel the problem, the real-world burden, the WHO priority pathogens (including the ESKAPE group), practical prevention strategies, and where scientific innovation might lead us next. For anyone studying healthcare, writing policy, or simply trying to be an informed adult, AMR is not “optional knowledge”; it is essential.
