  • Abstract:
  • The ‘Ramayana’, one of the greatest epics of Indian literature, is a timeless repository of moral, ethical, and psychological wisdom. Traditionally attributed to Valmiki, the epic narrates the life of Lord Rama and presents exemplary models of virtuous living through characters such as Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, Hanuman, and Vibhishana. Beyond its religious and literary significance, the ‘Ramayana’ provides profound insights into character formation, emotional intelligence, resilience, ethical leadership, and social responsibility. The virtues depicted in the epic—including righteousness (‘dharma’), truthfulness, compassion, courage, humility, loyalty, patience, forgiveness, gratitude, and self-control—remain relevant in addressing contemporary challenges related to mental health, education, leadership, and governance. This review paper analyses these virtues from the perspectives of positive psychology, Indian psychology, and ethical philosophy. Using a qualitative review of classical texts and contemporary scholarly literature, the paper demonstrates that the ‘Ramayana’ offers a holistic framework for human flourishing by integrating moral values with psychological well-being. The study concludes that the teachings of the ‘Ramayana’ can contribute significantly to value-based education, ethical leadership, counselling, and sustainable social development.
