  • Abstract:
  • Background: The term "postpartum psychosis" is commonly used in clinical settings to describe a range of symptoms that appear suddenly, usually within the first two weeks after giving birth. Postpartum psychosis is a serious mental health disorder that occurs postnatal and impacts around 1-2 out of every 1000 births globally, yet it is not recognized within diagnostic classifications. Objective: To assess effectiveness of health education on prevention of postpartum psychosis among primigravida mothers. Methods: A quantitative, quasi-experimental research design with experimental and control groups was adopted. A total of 90 primigravida mothers (45 in the experimental group and 45 in the control group). Baseline knowledge was assessed using a Structured Interview Schedule (SIS). A post-test was conducted after seven days using the same tool. Results: Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Before the intervention, the experimental group had a mean knowledge score of 9.13 ± 2.02, which increased to 21.31 ± 3.04 after health education. The control group's mean score changed only slightly from 7.55 ± 2.22 to 8.91 ± 2.63. The calculated t-value for the experimental group (t = 23.34, p < 0.05) indicates a highly significant improvement between pre-test and post-test scores. Similarly, the unpaired t-test value (t = 16.37, p < 0.05) demonstrated that the experimental group performed significantly better than the control group. Conclusion: The study concludes that structured health education is an effective strategy for increasing awareness and promoting early prevention of postpartum psychosis among first-time pregnant mothers. It recommends integrating mental health education into routine antenatal care to improve maternal mental health outcomes.
