Education and Technology in the Digital Age: Transforming Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Professional Development

  • The rapid development of digital technologies has transformed how knowledge is accessed, created, communicated, assessed, and applied. Artificial intelligence (AI), generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), learning analytics, cloud computing, immersive technologies, mobile devices, and digital learning platforms increasingly influence educational practice. This article examines technology-driven transformation in education, with particular attention to technology-enhanced teaching and learning, AI, digital citizenship, and teacher education and professional development. Drawing on foundational educational theories and recent scholarship from 2023–2026, it argues that technology can strengthen personalization, accessibility, collaboration, learner engagement, and professional productivity when integrated with sound pedagogy. Recent systematic reviews show that AI applications now include adaptive learning, personalized tutoring, assessment, prediction, learning support, and emerging generative tools (Wang et al., 2024; Fu et al., 2025). GenAI research increasingly addresses instructional applications, learning outcomes, academic integrity, and pedagogical scaffolding (Qian, 2025; Chen & Cheung, 2025; Liu & Zhong, 2025). At the same time, unequal access, privacy, misinformation, algorithmic bias, and teacher preparedness remain important concerns (UNESCO, 2023; Mirazchiyski, 2024). The article argues that teachers should remain central to educational decision-making and that professional development should combine technological, pedagogical, ethical, and evaluative competencies. The future of education is therefore best understood as human-centred augmentation, in which technology extends rather than replaces professional teaching.
