abstract = {Mucosal drug delivery offers an effective strategy for improving drug absorption and therapeutic performance while enabling both local and systemic treatment. However, mucus turnover, enzymatic degradation, limited epithelial permeability, and rapid physiological clearance can restrict drug retention and bioavailability. Recent developments in nanotechnology and polymer science have introduced advanced delivery platforms capable of addressing these limitations. Nanocarriers such as liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, and nanoemulsions can enhance drug solubility, protect unstable molecules, regulate release, and improve interaction with mucosal tissues. Bioadhesive systems incorporating chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, and thiolated polymers can increase formulation residence at mucosal sites. Combining mucoadhesion with mucopenetration provides opportunities for prolonged retention and improved epithelial access. Stimuli-responsive, targeted, hybrid, and multifunctional systems further enhance delivery precision. This review summarizes recent advances, mechanisms, benefits, limitations, and translational challenges associated with nanocarrier-based and bioadhesive mucosal drug delivery systems.},
