Abstract
I look into ways to forecast fuel use in large vehicles using machine learning. I look at data from several sources that describe the characteristics of the road, the car, the driver, and the weather, and I identify a regression to a fuel consumption expressed in litres per distance. The thesis was written for Scania and uses information that Scania has access to. I assess the most effective machine learning techniques, how the frequency of data collection impacts the prediction, and which features have the most bearing on fuel usage. The lower collecting frequency of 10 minutes is, in my opinion, superior than the greater frequency of 1 minute. The evaluated models perform similarly, and the factors that affect fuel consumption most are the weight of the vehicle, the speed at which it is travelling, and the slope of the road.
