  • Abstract:
  • “Literature is more of a functional term than an ontological term” (Sayeed). There is no God-given difference between a literary and a non-literary text. The difference lies only in the event of reading the texts, pragmatic and non-pragmatic. The essence of literature lies in the relation between the text and the reader and thereby in the act of reading. It requires an active reader for the event of reading to take place. The essence of literature is determined by the aim of the author, the performativity of the text and the appropriate stance of the reader. Thus, it would be right to say that performativity is itself a marker of literature. Performativity is how the text is put together. Mode, genre, form, generic markers and thematic elements are all about the performativity of the text meaning how the text enacts the metaphor.
